THE GR®65
Whilst the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela dates back to the Middle Ages, the current GR®65 is much more recent. Developed from the 1970s onwards by the French Hiking Federation, it is now one of the most popular routes to Santiago de Compostela in France and benefits from an extensive network of accommodation.
Following the Puy route, or Via Podiensis, it links Le Puy-en-Velay, in Haute-Loire, toSaint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, over a distance of nearly 755 kilometres. Along the way, it crosses the Lot from north to south. Further north, the GR®65 reaches Geneva via the Via Gebennensis, which takes walkers to Le Puy-en-Velay before giving way to the Via Podiensis.
With our pilgrim’s journal in hand and our rucksack on our backs, let’s set off on this legendary route. From the lush landscapes ofthe Aveyron to the cliffs and golden stone of the Lot Valley, the route reveals, stage by stage, an exceptional natural and cultural heritage.
Along the way, we’ll pass through two sections of the trail listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as towns and villages with their own unique character: Figeac, Faycelles and Cajarc. These are all stops where you can take the time to discover the heritage, the landscapes and the very special atmosphere of the Way of St James.
