Cajarc–Larroque-Toirac Greenway

An old railway line, a ribbon of countryside, with the River Lot as a backdrop… Between Cajarc and Larroque-Toirac, the new greenway offers 9.6 km of accessible walking in the heart of the Lot Valley. Starting from Cajarc, the route heads to Cadrieu, passes at the foot of Montbrun and then continues towards Larroque-Toirac, through scenery that is emblematic of the Quercy region: limestone cliffs, stone villages, views of the river, railway heritage and a tunnel carved into the rock. A delightful interlude combining nature, history and stunning landscapes.

Here, the train has given way to sustainable transport. The cycle route follows the route ofthe formerCahors–Capdenac-Garerailway line, a piece of railway heritage that is now being given a new lease of life as a safe and accessible route.

From the former Cajarc railway station, the route heads eastwards in a peaceful setting. As you ride along, you’ll come across traces of this railway history: old stations, level crossings, engineering structures, a tunnel, low walls and views typical of railway lines.

This conversion lends the stretch a unique atmosphere: you walk gently, without any great difficulty, as if suspended between industrial heritage, nature and the local heritage.

From Cajarc to Montbrun

Starting from Cajarc, Françoise Sagan’s village, the greenway offers a quick route to the valley’s landscapes. The River Lot is very close by. In some places, the views open out onto the river’s meanders, the hillsides and the cliffs that give this area its distinctive character.

Heading towards Cadrieu, the route alternates between sections close to the river and stretches at the foot of the hills. It’s an ideal stretch for a leisurely outing: a morning stroll, a photo stop at the Cadrieu wash house, a family day out or a stopover during a cycling holiday in the Lot Valley.

The approach to Montbrun is one of the highlights of the route. Perched high above the valley, the village offers a striking silhouette with its private château.

The Montbrun tunnel

An unusual passage

This section also has a lovely surprise in store for you: the walk through the Montbrun tunnel. This former railway structure, a testament to the line’s history, adds a touch of adventure to the walk. At the entrance, the lighting switches on to ensure a safe passage. Its discreet and appropriately dim red LED light minimises disturbance to the bats that inhabit the tunnel.

A highlight of the route, much loved by children, which adds to the charm of this cycle path. Here, you’re not just cycling: you’re travelling through a landscape, a history and an entire region, whilst also respecting the local biodiversity.

Towards Larroque-Toirac

As you continue towards Larroque-Toirac ( Mas del Suc), the greenway returns to the rocky landscape of the valley. Cliffs, low walls, walnut trees and views of the hillsides: the scenery gently accompanies you as you reach the end of the route.

Larroque-Toirac is known for its medieval castle, perched on the cliffside. With its towers, caves and spectacular setting, it’s a great place to visit to round off the trip.

The greenway thus becomes much more than just a cycle route: it is a gateway to the villages, panoramic views, castles and landscapes of the Lot Valley.

The green route in practice

A greenway, a shared section

Reserved for non-motorised transport, the greenway can be explored on foot, by bike, on an e-bike, on rollerblades, in a wheelchair or with a pushchair. For everyone’s comfort, adjust your speed, keep to the right and be mindful of other users.

Good habits

Slow down at junctions, residents’ access points and former level crossings.
Motorised vehicles are not permitted, except for emergency services, maintenance or specific access points. Dogs must be kept close to you, ideally on a lead.
If cycling, remember to check your brakes, tyres, lights and bell. Helmets are compulsory for children under 12 and recommended for everyone.
