Under the starry skydes Causses du Quercy

Reilhac, starred village on the Causses du Quercy

Ajouter aux favoris

A Causse village in bloom, Reilhac reveals its heritage of water and starry skies. In the heart of the Causse de Gramat, the Romanesque church, the spring and the washhouse are a reminder of just how precious water was in these limestone soils. During the day, the Chemin de l’Eau (Water Trail) leads from lakes to wash-houses, along a discreet rural heritage trail. At night, Reilhac changes atmosphere. With its “Star-Spangled Towns and Villages” label, it reveals another treasure: a pure sky, open to the stars, in the heart of the Black Triangle of Quercy.

Church and heritage

water-related

Reilhac has a typical rural heritage of the Causse de Gramat, closely linked to the presence of water:

    • the Romanesque church at the heart of the village
    • the spring, a precious resource in these limestone soils,
    • the wash-house, an essential part of daily life in days gone by,
    • the lakes and waterholes, built to collect rainwater,
    • the small hydraulic works, traces of the ingenuity of the Caussenards,
    • the ox-shoeing work, a reminder of the village’s agricultural life.
Under the

starry sky

Reilhac has the rare distinction of offering one of the most beautiful sights on the Causse at nightfall: a remarkably pure starry sky. Situated in the heart of the Triangle Noir du Quercy and awarded the“Villes et Villages étoilés” (Starry Towns and Villages) label, the village is an ideal place to contemplate the celestial vault. On the heights, an astronomical observation site has been set up so that everyone can take full advantage of this natural treasure, one of the best-preserved skies in France. The interpretation desk invites you to spot the constellations, gain a better understanding of the night sky and appreciate the importance of preserving the night sky. When the sun disappears behind the trees and the causse calms down, all you have to do is sit back, look up and savour this simple, rare spectacle: a deep, silent sky, open to the stars.
