Perched on the Baume rock, more than 80 metres high, Calvignac dominates the Lot valley, offering remarkable panoramic views of the river and its meanders. Situated between Cajarc and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, two emblematic sites of the Lot, this village of character enjoys a privileged location. A former fortified village and stronghold of the Viscounts of Quercy, Calvignac once occupied a strategic position in a loop of the river. Today, the village has preserved the precious remains of its ancient castrum, which can be seen around the old castle and along the stone streets, offering a real journey back in time.

In the heart of the Causses du Quercy, Calvignac occupied a strategic position for guarding the Lot valley. Its proximity to the river enabled it to take advantage of river traffic and the rich alluvial soil that was ideal for farming. From the 10th century onwards, the village became the seat of a Quercy viscounty, along with Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, and played an important role in the Hundred Years’ War. Today, it retains many vestiges of its fortified past. In the heart of the village, you’ll find

  • The church of Saint-Étienne, which has been remodelled and retains some Romanesque features
  • The remains of the medieval castle , including a fortified wall with a pointed-arched gateway and two feudal towers
  • Old streets with medieval houses remodelled during the Renaissance.

The village also boasts an exceptional panoramic view of the Causses and the Lot valley, facing Larnagol and its castle.
