In the heart of the Causses du Quercy, Calvignac occupied a strategic position for guarding the Lot valley. Its proximity to the river enabled it to take advantage of river traffic and the rich alluvial soil that was ideal for farming. From the 10th century onwards, the village became the seat of a Quercy viscounty, along with Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, and played an important role in the Hundred Years’ War. Today, it retains many vestiges of its fortified past. In the heart of the village, you’ll find
- The church of Saint-Étienne, which has been remodelled and retains some Romanesque features
- The remains of the medieval castle , including a fortified wall with a pointed-arched gateway and two feudal towers
- Old streets with medieval houses remodelled during the Renaissance.
The village also boasts an exceptional panoramic view of the Causses and the Lot valley, facing Larnagol and its castle.
